The Opening Day Experience at Comerica Park
Detroit's Opening Day is not just a baseball game. It is the city's unofficial holiday and one of the most celebrated Opening Days in all of professional sports. Comerica Park on Woodward Avenue in the heart of downtown has been the Tigers' home since 2000, and the stadium's iconic tiger statues, Ferris wheel, and carousel give it a character that no other ballpark can match. On Opening Day 2027, roughly 41,000 fans will fill the seats while tens of thousands more flood the surrounding streets for the festivities. Detroit has one of the longest-running Opening Day parade traditions in baseball, with floats, marching bands, classic cars, and community groups processing down Woodward Avenue toward the stadium before first pitch. The parade typically starts at Montcalm Street and heads south to Comerica Park, and the sidewalks are packed three-deep with fans in Old English D gear. Inside the park, the concourse wraps around the field with views from every angle, and the food program features local favorites including Coney dogs from National Coney Island and sliders from Green Dot Stables. The energy in Detroit on this day is pure civic pride, and the roar when the first pitch crosses home plate shakes the entire block.
Tailgate and Pregame
The pregame scene starts early in Detroit. The parking lots along Brush Street and Montcalm Street fill up by mid-morning with grills, coolers, and sound systems turning the area into a massive block party. Detroiters take their tailgating seriously, and you will find everything from smoked ribs to shrimp on the grill alongside the classic burgers and brats. For bar pregame, Nemo's on Michigan Avenue has been the Tigers' bar since the old Tiger Stadium days and runs shuttle buses to Comerica Park on game days. Hockeytown Cafe on Woodward Avenue, despite the name, is packed with baseball fans on Opening Day with its enormous bar, multiple levels, and proximity to the stadium. The District Detroit area surrounding the park has grown significantly with new restaurants and bars. Tin Roof on Columbia Street offers live music and a lively crowd. Grand Trunk Pub in the historic train depot building serves craft cocktails in a beautifully restored space. Take the QLine streetcar down Woodward if you are staying in Midtown or New Center and avoid the parking entirely.
After the Game
After the game, Greektown is the move. Located just a few blocks east of Comerica Park, this historic neighborhood is home to some of Detroit's best restaurants and the Greektown Casino. Pegasus Taverna on Monroe Street serves flaming saganaki cheese that the entire restaurant shouts "Opa!" for, a tradition that pairs perfectly with a Tigers win. Fishbone's on Monroe is a New Orleans-inspired restaurant with strong drinks and even stronger flavors. The bars along Monroe Street including Santorini Estiatorio and the Golden Fleece stay lively well past midnight on game nights. Beyond Greektown, the Belt alley downtown hosts intimate cocktail bars including Sugar House and Standby. Corktown, the oldest neighborhood in Detroit just west of downtown, has become a dining destination with spots like Lady of the House and Mudgie's Deli. The nightlife in Detroit has evolved dramatically and Opening Day is the perfect night to experience all of it.
Make It a Weekend
Detroit is experiencing a renaissance and deserves more than just a game day visit. Fly into DTW and stay downtown or in Corktown for walkability. Saturday, explore the Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the finest art museums in the country, then walk through Eastern Market where vendors, murals, and food stalls create an unforgettable atmosphere. Sunday brunch at Selden Standard in Corktown or Rose's Fine Food in the East Side sets the tone for a day exploring Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River with a conservatory, aquarium, and stunning city skyline views. Late March in Detroit means temperatures in the 50s with the first hints of spring breaking through.
