The Best Sunday Roasts in London

The Tradition

The Sunday roast is Britain's secular religion. A proper one requires: roasted meat (beef, chicken, lamb, or pork), roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, and gravy. The quality of the gravy is the measure of the kitchen.

The Harwood Arms — Fulham

The only Michelin-starred pub in London. The game-focused menu changes seasonally. The roast is served with precision and generosity in equal measure. Book two weeks ahead.

Blacklock — Multiple Locations

The all-in roast for the table is the move. Piles of meat, shared sides, unlimited gravy. The Soho location has the most energy. The price point is remarkably fair for what you receive.

The Marksman — Hackney

East London gastropub with a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The beef and barley bun is the starter everyone orders. The roast itself is simple, generous, and cooked with evident care.

The Guinea Grill — Mayfair

Old-school in the best way. The Guinea has been serving roasts since the 15th century (not a typo). The beef is from the Smithfield butchers. The atmosphere is wood-paneled, unhurried, and gloriously unfashionable.

Hawksmoor — Multiple Locations

The steak restaurant empire does a Sunday roast that rivals its regular menu. The 35-day dry-aged beef with dripping potatoes and bone marrow gravy is magnificent.

A proper Sunday roast is not a meal. It is a pace. It starts at 1 PM and it ends when someone suggests a walk.
