NOLA's FIFA Warm-Up: Houston and Dallas Are Next Door

New Orleans doesn't host World Cup matches, but it's the ultimate warm-up city. Houston is a 5-hour drive, Dallas is 7 hours, and both host marquee matches including Semifinals.

Why Start in NOLA

  • The food: No city in America eats better. Beignets at Cafe Du Monde, po'boys at Parkway, gumbo at Dooky Chase's — this is where you fuel up before match day.
  • The music: Live jazz on Frenchmen Street every night. No cover, no minimum. Just walk in and listen.
  • The culture: Second lines, Mardi Gras Indians, brass bands — NOLA is unlike anywhere else.
  • The value: Hotel rates are lower than Houston, Dallas, Miami, and NYC.
  • NOLA Watch Party Spots

  • The Rusty Nail — Warehouse District soccer bar with good food and every match on screen
  • Finn McCool's — Mid-City Irish pub, strong soccer community, the best atmosphere in the city for matches
  • The Bulldog — 50 taps, dog-friendly patio, screens on the patio
  • Manning's — Harrah's Casino sports bar with massive screens
  • Road Trip Routes

    NOLA to Houston (5 hours)

  • Take I-10 West straight through Baton Rouge and Beaumont
  • Stop in Baton Rouge for lunch — The Chimes or Louie's Cafe
  • Arrive in Houston by late afternoon for a night match
  • NOLA to Dallas (7 hours)

  • I-49 North through Lafayette and Shreveport, then I-20 East to Dallas
  • Or fly — Southwest runs NOLA to Love Field (Dallas) in 1.5 hours, $80-150
  • Tips

  • Fly NOLA to Houston or Dallas if you don't want to drive — flights are cheap and frequent
  • Spend 2-3 nights in NOLA before heading to your match city
  • Frenchmen Street > Bourbon Street for locals and live music
  • Book NOLA hotels in the French Quarter or Warehouse District for walkability
